What to expect from a job within marketing
Meet Sunneva! Sunneva has had a summer internship with Unilever and would like to share with us her experiences within marketing.
What were your responsibilities within the company?
Over the course of the summer you get a lot of responsibility where you are trusted with running your own projects. At Unilever I mostly worked within the refreshment category with some of the world’s best ice cream brands such as Ben & Jerry's, Magnum and Frisko.
I had quite a lot of different tasks from day to day. As an example I would use different data sets to do campaign analysis that I presented to top managers, then they took actions based on the findings. What I found fascinating about the job and the FMCG industry in general is that you can do analysis where decisions are taken and carried out already the day after. So it is very fast paced and dynamic.
What did a usual day at the office look like?
Its hard to talk about such thing as “a usual day” since the days varied quite a lot. Some days you would have a lot of meetings and presentations, whereas other days you would be working a lot by yourself. You also for example go “out in the market” where you go to different supermarkets or spend the day with a Frisko driver to get insights into other aspects of the supply chain.
What was the most important thing that you learned at university that you were applying to your job?
Its hard to pinpoint one thing but I think that taking on challenging tasks, learning new things, learning to work with different people and thinking analytically are things that you learn and you will use no matter what you work with.
But I also have to say that for this particular job I was extremely grateful for having had excel and statistics courses - thought I would never in my life say that…
How did you get your job?
First step is sending in a rather “traditional” application online. Next I got to know that I was through to the second step which was an interview taken over the phone. From there six people made it to the final step of the process, which was an assessment day held at the Unilever office in Copenhagen. On the assessment day we had to solve individual cases, do group work and each one of us had an individual interview.
It was an extensive application process but overall a very good experience!
